Seven, as the Rochdale Pioneers would have it, and we usually leave it at that. But if we are to note the specific wordings of the law, “the universally accepted principles of cooperation … include, but are not limited to, the following: (1) Voluntary and Open Membership … (2) Democratic Member Control … (3) Member Economic Participation … (4) Autonomy and Independence … (5) Education, Training and Information … (6) Cooperation Among Cooperatives … (7) Concern for Community”, then the accurate answer is “not necessarily seven” or “could be more”.
In the same opening sentence of Sec. 3, note also the requirement that “(e)very cooperative shall conduct its affairs in accordance with Filipino culture, good values and experience,” which clearly reflects that these are the principles legislated into country legislation.
